On island Pag you can enjoy in Pag`s specialties in restaurants. For fun you can visit night clubs, caffe bars... You can try some sports for recreation: biking, water sports, diving, sailing, surfing... Pag offers accommodation in different private houses, apartments, hotels, rooms, camps... You can go on excursions and visit some beautiful nearby places. You can research Pag`s bay by boat. 10 km from town Pag there is fresh-water Lake Small Mud and Lake Large Mud which are special ornithological reservations. Sestakovci is a group of cliffs on north side of the island Pag. You can get to it just by sea. Peak of St. Juraj is located north from town Pag. You can recognize it by square structure on the top. There is a great view on Velebit and beach Malin from the top of the hill. Pag`s triangle is a print in rocks revealed in 1999. The rocks in the triangle has lighter colour than the ones outside of the triangle. When it is exposed to ultra violet light it radiates red colour. St. Vid is the highest peak on island Pag, 342 m high. There is a beautiful view on Pag`s bay from the top. Pag offers many different kinds of fun and recreation, but it also has many monuments and parts of island that have to be seen. That beauty you just can`t pass.

CULTURE AND ATTRACTIONS


Town Pag is known as a town of a sea salt. You can still see production of salt in the old way, drainage in small pools immersed into the water. Town Pag is also known for lace. It is free hand work and each one is unique. Old town of town Pag is cultural, administrative and trade center of island Pag. It is very known Pag`s cheese that you must try. Attractions to see in town Pag: â?? Duke`s Palace, â?? Palaces Mirkovic, Portada, Jadrulic..., â?? Tower Kamerlengo, â?? Abbey of St. Peter, â?? Church of St. Cross, â?? Church of St. Frane, â?? Church of St. Juraj, â?? Tower Skrivanat, â?? Storehouses of salt, â?? Monastery draw-well, â?? Statue of Mary of the Old town, â?? The Golden Ornaments... You have to visit Pag at Carnival time. Winter Carnival starts first Saturday after holiday of the Holy Three Kings and lasts till Lent. Summer Carnival has been kept since the 60s of the 20th century and it lasts usually 1 day at the end of July. Pag`s Slave is a drama play kept as tradition. It is about a slave girl, granddaughter of banus Derencin who was defeated in 15th century from the Turks.

HISTORY


Name Pag was first time mentioned in 10th century. 1 km south from today`s town Pag have been found remains of settlement. Bela IV gave to Pag a status of free royal town and in 1376. king Ludovik I confirmed it. Town of Pag is cultural center of island Pag. From Antique times it was called Caska. Today`s Old town was founded when Caska was ruined in earthquake. In 10th century town Pag was urbanised and it was developing. Town walls were built, churches, squares, palaces... In 1403. king Ladislav sold town Pag to Venetia. In 15th century there was a danger of Turks and inhabitants started to built a new town, today`s Pag. In 1474. inhabitants moved to the new town. Pag had walls and 9 towers which protected town from attacks and it was possible for town to develope. In the Old town Franciscan monastery was built in 1589. In Pag many patrician families lived and had important role: Portade, Zorovics, Misolics, Jadrulics, Mirkovics... In 1905. disease attacked vineyards and many inhabitants moved to Australia, Canada and USA. During the World War II patricians disappeared and many more inhabitants moved. During the 60s in 20th century tourism starts to develope. Pag is developing outside of the walls.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE


Island Pag (Kvarner, Croatia) is one of the largest islands in Croatia. It has area 285 km2. It is the island with the longest coastline in Croatia, 270 km long. You can get to the island in the south by bridge from Posedarje (340 m) or in the north by ferry from Prizna. Island Pag is the only Croatian island that is divided on two districts. Some known touristic destination on island Pag: Novalja, Mandre, Kolan, Pag, Povljana, Stara Novalja... Island Pag has karst terrain, coves, bays, aromatic plants, low grass... Pag bay is the largest bay on the island and it has 20 km of beaches. It is shallow and it has tested, medicinal mud. Pag has rich vegetation life, especially in low areas protected from wind bora. Most prevailing grass is sage. You can find rich flora on island Pag: asparagus, St. Ivan`s flowers, nettle, fennel, blackberry, lavander, blowballs, absinth, eglantines... Pag also has rich animal life: griffon vulture, eagle owl, rabbits, pheasants, sparrows, nightingales, snakes, lizards, ducks, foxes, sea animals... On island Pag there are no big animals.
